In China where they first began cultivating them for business, they bring good fortune and are used for baby showers and celebrations. Back in the Netherlands where I’m from (and the rest of Western Europe) they are funeral flowers that symbolize death, as they bloom in autumn. We all see the same flower, the same world, and based on our circumstances we interpret it in different ways. 

In the end, we all use symbols like everyday flowers to deal with and tell the stories of our shared yet unique human experience. We are all connected, we all share the fundamental need to reflect on the same aspects of human life: grief and joy, births and deaths. And we all do it through an appreciation for a beautiful flower, and our connection to Mother Nature. Isn’t that exquisite?
