Why Art Therapy helps you gain insight
Share
Art therapy gives you insight by:
- allowing you to share your experience in ways words fall short
- helping you be present and curious about your feelings,
- giving you an alternative way to express yourself,
- letting you calmly explore different ways to respond,
- helping you see problems from a new perspective.
How insights gained in art therapy can help you heal
Here's an example. If you are struggling with feeling out of control, an art therapy session with water colour would be very confronting. Because, water colour is a medium that is very hard to control. Art therapy will confront you with your fear of being out of control, and at the same time it'll comfort you. Because you can safely experience practicing what makes you uncomfortable, in a setting where there are no dire consequences of being out of control.
An art therapist will help you sit with those feelings, and give you literal physical art materials that can help you bring some more control to the things you can control on your page. It would help you stay curious and see your fear from a Birds Eye view, while also giving you tools to explore different ways to respond to your fear of being out of control.
In the end, you will have a picture of the internal process that you didn't have the words to describe before, and now we can discuss it!
